Fall Indoor Home Maintenance Checklist

Fall has arrived! The beautiful brilliant display of colors along with the trees losing their leaves, reminds us that those falling leaves will soon be replaced with falling snowflakes. It is a great idea, while the weather is still pleasant, for homeowners to complete Fall indoor maintenence. At Keystone Home Inspection we understand how important home maintenance is to the longevity of your investment. We decided to create a "Fall Indoor Home Maintenence Checklist" to help you protect your investment. Listed below are 10 tips to help guide the average homeowner in completing their Fall maintenence.

  1. Always clean from top to bottom. Drapes can be vacuumed or professionally cleaned. Window treatments can usually be laundered. When those items are removed, you have perfect access to your windows. Thoroughly clean windows and window sills.
  2. Replace light bulbs and clean light-diffusing bowls/globes resting on your light fixtures.
  3. Vacuum baseboards and corners. Move your furniture pieces so you can vacuum beneath and behind them. Also vacuum upholostered furniture. However, if you choose to have your furniture or carpets professionally cleaned, Fall is a great time. Professional cleaning companies offer great deals to those who schedule early in the season.
  4. Turn your mattresses end to end and front to back as this equalizes wear.
  5. To put your family in a warm and cozy position for winter slumber, clean mattress pads, pillows, duvets, blankets and comforters.
  6. Inspect each appliance. Pull out fridge from the wall and clean underneath and behind it. Vacuum the condensor coils to remove dust and debris. If your fridge is equipped with bottom mounted coils, use a long narrow brush to clean away dust and debris.
  7. Check dryer exhaust tube for lint build-up. Clean or replace, as this has been a known cause of housefires. Also check the dryer vent for debris or birds' nests.
  8. Inspect washer hoses for cracks, tears or bulges. It is a good idea to replace your washer hoses every other year.
  9. Clean or replace furnace filters or humidifier elements before the heating season begins. Changing furnace filters monthly will maximize energy savings and increase indoor comfort during the winter months.
  10. Schedule fall furnace inspections now! It is not a good idea to wait until the weather turns cold to do this, as you may find yourself in the cold!
